California Employers Could See Payroll Tax. California could be headed for a health care overhaul that could leave employers paying an estimated $2.7 billion a year tax on their payroll.
Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger and state Assembly Speaker Fabian Nuñez filed initiative language late last week with the state attorney general for a ballot measure that would finance their $14.4-billion plan to extend health care benefits to most Californians by almost doubling the state tax on cigarettes to $1.75 a pack.

The EEO-1 is the annual demographic report companies (with greater than 100 employees) and federal contractors (with greater than 50 employees and $50,000 or more in government contracts) are required to submit to the agency every September 30th. The survey asks employers to classify their workforce by job category, sex, race and ethnic identity.

Venting Online: How To Deal With Employee Blogs

Blogs (electronic internet diaries or postings) are booming. Employees are now using blogs to broadcast information and opinions worldwide. Inevitably, some of those employees will post negative, harassing, hostile, false, or confidential information and opinions about their employers and co-employees.
In determining how to deal with such postings, employers will first need to consider when they can legally monitor computer sites; when they will actually monitor; how they will notify employees of their intent to monitor; and whether any objectionable postings are legally protected or instead form a basis for discipline or discharge. Navigating these treacherous waters is a daunting task, but if you fail to protect your company’s reputation in appropriate cases, you will likely open the door to even more harm.
